Let’s Have a (Disco) Ball

Let's review some easy crafts, fabulous recipes, and great products. A little shine is a perfect way to add glamour to your Christmas decor or New Year's Eve party.

Disco (Mirror) Ball Background

Before we list some cool DIY projects, let's cover some background history. Did you know that Disco Balls were called Mirror Balls? The reason for the name is apparent, given that they are made up of hundreds of tiny mirrors. But this was back in the 1970s, and most people believe it originated from that area, but boy, are they wrong. Let's rewind a few decades to when decor innovators Louis Bernard Woeste and William A. Stephens filed a patent for a so-called myriad reflector in 1916. The dawn of disco was still decades away. But their glittering mirror ball—destined for ballrooms, nightclubs, dance pavilions, and skating rinks—was made with revelry in mind.

1. How do you Hang a Disco Ball?

The most straightforward trick in the book would be the most original to hang your disco ball. Please do not limit yourself. You can securely attach the disco ball practically anywhere. Use screws and hooks specifically designed to attach objects to the ceiling. Swag hooks and ceiling S-hooks make excellent choices for mini disco balls. If your ball doesn't come with a string or a chain to hang it from, use a monofilament fishing line to tie it to a ceiling hook.

2. Disco Balls Table Decorations

You can find affordable disco ball ornaments and spread them throughout the table for a festive messy look, or get inspired by these creative centerpieces ideas.

3. How to Make a Disco Ball Wreath?

Welcome guests to the party with a spectacular and easy-to-make wreath. Super affordable and easy to make. You can find the supplies below at most craft stores. You can also find all this stuff on Amazon (just search "mini disco balls" or "disco ball ornament").

Supplies:

  • Wreath Form

  • Silver Tinsel Garland x2 (Get the fluffiest one you can find)

  • Mini Disco Ball Ornaments (The number you use will depend on the size of your wreath. Use your best judgment, and if you end up with extras, they look cute in a bowl on your coffee table!)

  • Hot Glue Gun and Extra Sticks

Directions:

  • Use hot glue to wrap your wreath form in silver tinsel garland. Make sure it is completely covered with garland.

  • Remove the hook part from the ornaments (mine snapped right off) and randomly glue them all over the wreath! Repeat until it looks AW-MAZING.

Disco Balls are Making a Comeback

The reason is shining through. They are an inexpensive way to create a lot of atmospheres. You buy a disco ball, you shine a light on it, and suddenly the entire room is covered in moving dots of light. So you get a lot of bang for your little disco ball. In general, people are looking to celebrate again (post-COVID). They are looking for moments of joy; sometimes, evoking joy is as simple as shining a light on a sphere covered in mirrored tiles.

Cheers!
